Following the signing of cooperation agreements with the governments of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden concerning the resettlement of refugees and other migrants, IOM’s Regional Office in Finland becomes IOM's Nordic Resettlement Centre.

Since the summer of 2005, IOM has been working on the formalization and standardization of its long-standing and successful cooperation with the Nordic countries concerning refugee resettlement and family reunification. As a result, new cooperation agreements have now been concluded allowing for quicker and more efficient cooperation between the Organization and sponsoring governments.

Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden are worldwide amongst the most important resettlement countries for refugees and migrants and have worked successfully with IOM for many years on the whole spectrum of resettlement and related issues, such as preparation of the refugees for their new life through cultural orientation classes, medical screening and health checks for refugees including the provision of medical escorts, logistical and movement arrangements at point of departure, transit and destination, assistance provided to facilitate the integration process of the newcomers, etc.

Through the Nordic Resettlement Centre in Helsinki, IOM allows for streamlined and more efficient resettlement processing for the benefit of the refugees and migrants as well as the sponsoring governments. As the Nordic Resettlement Center, the Regional IOM Office initiates and coordinates the following tasks:

  • Implementation of all resettlement activities for quota refugees and family reunification cases in close coordination with Nordic counterparts and concerned IOM field missions in countries of origin and transit;
  • Statistical and financial reporting to Nordic counterparts;
  • Monitoring and follow-up of all Nordic resettlement activities.
