Summary

In this six-month pilot project, IOM is providing the Finnish Directorate of Immigration with reliable and objective country of origin information for a selected number of countries (Angola, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, the Somaliland region of Somalia, and the three northern governorates of Iraq). Based on specific questions formulated by the Finnish Directorate of Immigration, the information is compiled through IOM’s extensive global network of local missions and local knowledge.

As the central clearing house, the IOM regional office in Helsinki coordinates the information requests, oversees their collection, and provides final editing of the collected information. In addition, IOM is preparing at least one country fact sheet with comprehensive and easily accessible country of origin information.

The project’s overall aim is to contribute to the effectiveness and integrity of Finland’s immigration and asylum system through the provision of factual and tailor-made country-of-origin information that is required for sound decision-making and operative planning in migration matters.
