IOM News release: Conference on judicial e-learning held in Tallinn on 4 June Print
On 4 June, 2007, experts from various European institutions involved in judicial training convened in Tallinn, Estonian, to discuss the benefits and challenges of e-learning in their particular field.

The conference was one of several activities under of the European Commission funded ”Judges Online: Capacity building for the Judiciary through e-learning” project which is coordinated by IOM Helsinki in cooperation with partners from Estonia, Finland, and Latvia.

During the conference, speakers from the European Judicial Training Network, the Council of Europe, and the Academy of European Law updated participants on recent developments in the area of judicial training through e-learning. Furthermore, participants discussed their visions for improving and expanding the use of e-learning. In conclusion, participants agreed that there is a strong need for well-coordinated and intensified joint European efforts in the field of judicial e-learning.

The ”Judges Online” project is part of IOM’s efforts to combat discrimination on grounds of racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, as well as disability, age, gender, or sexual orientation, thereby helping the integration of immigrants and other minority groups. The project aims at advancing the coherent and efficient application of anti-discrimination legislation by means of an online e-learning tool for training members of the judiciary, including judges and public prosecutors. The e-learning tool for the judiciary constitutes a time and cost efficient means for capacity building and awareness raising with regard to anti-discrimination legislation among the judiciary in Finland, Estonia, and Latvia.
