IOM launches MIDA Health project with ceremony at the Kanava Youth Centre
On 21 August 2008, IOM Helsinki officially launched the MIDA Health Somaliland-Puntland pilot project. Chaired by IOM’s project coordination team of Saed Guled and Juan Reyes, The Ceremony, which took place at the Kanava Youth Centre, brought together representatives from the Finland-based Somali diaspora, the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and IOM Helsinki to discuss the implementation of the project and to present practical ways through which Somali health care professionals can participate in it. The presentations were followed by a lively “questions and answers” session, in the presence of IOM Regional Representative Dr. Thomas Weiss.
Some 30 prospective participants, including medical doctors, nurses, dentists, and laboratory technicians took part in the event, demonstrating the strong interest and excitement this project has created within Finland’s Somali community. It also confirms the commitment of Somali health care professionals, both male and female, to make the project a success and an example to follow. Following the event’s formal agenda, all participants shared a fantastic Finnish-African dinner offered by the Kanava Youth Centre and the MIDA Health Somaliland-Puntland project staff.
IOM Helsinki would like to thank Dr. Anu Eskonheimo from the Department for Africa and the Middle East of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, Dr. Mohamud Abdillahi from the Association of Somali Health Professionals in the Nordic Countries, Mr. Aden Mohamed Aden from the Kanava Youth Centre, and all those who attended the ceremony for their interest and support of the MIDA Health Somaliland-Puntland project.
