Over the first two months of the year 2018 almost 200 hundred persons chose to return to their countries of origin from Finland through IOM's programme for Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR). Of these, 161 persons returned to Iraq.

The total for this period is 197 persons to a total of 13 countries. Apart from Iraq, the other TOP-5 return countries are Georgia, the Russian Federation, Iran and Afghanistan. The number for these countries compared to Iraq are relatively low with under 10 returnees per month and for most under 5 persons in overall during the period.

The number of applications for return is 219, listed as referrals in the statistics. The number is slightly higher than at the end of last year. The number of returns in the same period is lower that the previous year.

IOM Finland's assistance to voluntary returnees from Finland is based on an agreement with the Finnish Immigration Service, Migri. Returnees can be granted either cash grants to help them reintegrate or are given in-kind-support like training.

According to IOM, voluntary return should always be the preferred mode of return, as it is the most sustainable alternative in view of the reintegration of migrants.
