Migration, human trafficking & forced labour: how to avoid risks and increase transparency in labour supply chains
Migrants and refugees in forced labor, lack of transparency in working conditions in the supply chain and inadequate supervision of subcontractors are among the most significant risks Finnish companies are facing in the area of social responsibility.
The role and responsibility of business to respect human rights, also those of migrant workers, is clearly defined in the 2011 UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Although many companies have extensive monitoring and auditing systems in place, the lack of visibility to the entire supply chain may result in significant risks that companies are not yet prepared to identify or to tackle.
FIBS and International Organization for Migration (IOM) invite businesses to explore how they can manage their labour supply chains to respect human rights of migrant workers and their families.
What are the key areas of concern/focus for Finnish businesses in regards of protecting migrant workers and their families?
- What are the concrete and practical ways businesses can reduce risks of migrant exploitation within a company and in supply chain?
- What are the main challenges in meeting human rights commitments related to migrants and how to address them?

About IOM's initiatives on corporate responsibility:

It is comprised of an international standard, certification scheme and a compliance and monitoring mechanism. For businesses and migrant workers, IRIS serves as a due diligence tool for the assessment of labour recruiters.
CREST (Corporate Responsibility in Eliminating Slavery and Trafficking) programme centres around three pillars of work and is designed to help companies maximize the benefits of migrant labour in their supply chains: 1) Training for the commercial sector on trafficking and slavery, 2) Pre and/or post orientation training for labour migrants and 3) Supporting supply chain mapping and ethical recruitment.
