Since the beginning of January 2017 a total of 520 persons have returned voluntarily to 18 different countries with the help of IOM Helsinki.

In March IOM Helsinki assisted 164 persons to return.

The majority of those assisted returned to Iraq, followed by Albania, Afhanistan and Ukraine.

99 percent of those returning in 2017 received support for their reintegration. Most of them received cash support, 79 percent of those were granted more than 900 euros. One percent received in-kind-support to the amount of 1500 euros.

IOM Helsinki’s assistance to voluntary returnees from Finland is based on an agreement with the Finnish Immigration Service Migri on the arrangement of Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration. According to IOM, voluntary return should always be the preferred means of return, as it is the most sustainable alternative in view of the reintegration of migrants.
