In May 2018 a total of 58 persons returned with the assistance of IOM Finland. There is a slight increase compared to the previous month this year but it is a lower number compared to the year before.

Overall this year 396 migrants have returned to their countries of origin through IOM's Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration -programme.

The majority have returned to Iraq (44 in May), but there have been returns to a total of 22 countries, an increase of two countries in May. Georgia and the Russian Federation are the second and third biggest countries of return.

Reintegration assistance is important to enhance migrant well-being upon return and is therefore a crucial component of IOM's AVRR programmes. The situations people return to vary widely, which is why reintegration assistance should always support the individual needs of a returnee. There are two different kind of reintegration support options: cash or in-kind support. Overall this year a 49% of returnees have received a cash grant of 801-1500 euros and 8% the in-kind support. Rest have received a cash grants with variying amounts. In addition to financial support IOM provides for example counselling, acquisition of travel documents, domestic and international travel arrangements, you can read more about it here.

IOM Finland's assistance to voluntary returnees from Finland is based on an agreement with the Finnish Immigration Service, Migri. Returnees can be granted either cash grants to help them reintegrate or are given in-kind-support like training.

According to IOM, voluntary return should always be the preferred mode of return, as it is the most sustainable alternative in view of the reintegration of migrants.
