Almost a third of returnees are families

During the first seven years of the month IOM Finland has assisted almost 500 persons with voluntary return and reintegration to their countries of departure. Almost one third of these have been travling as families or couples.

The total number of voluntary returnees this year is 493. Of these 30% have travelled as families or couples and 70% as single. 15% of the returnees have been children, almost as many boys as girls. Of the adult returnees the majority are men. 13% of those that have travelled this year are women.

The largest country of return is Iraq by far with 371 returnees. Georgia, the Russian Federation and Afghanistan are the three following countries. All in all voluntary returns have been made to 28 countries in 2018.

Reintegration assistance is important to enhance migrant well-being upon return and is therefore a crucial component of IOM's AVRR programmes. The situations people return to vary widely, which is why reintegration assistance should always support the individual needs of a returnee. There are two different kind of reintegration support options: cash or in-kind support.

Overall this year 45% of returnees have received a cash grant of 801-1500 euros and 7% the in-kind support. The rest have received cash grants of varying amounts. In addition to financial support IOM provides for example counselling, acquisition of travel documents, domestic and international travel arrangements, you can read more about it here.

IOM Finland's assistance to voluntary returnees from Finland is based on an agreement with the Finnish Immigration Service, Migri. Returnees can be granted either cash grants to help them reintegrate or are given in-kind-support like training.

According to IOM, voluntary return should always be the preferred mode of return, as it is the most sustainable alternative in view of the reintegration of migrants.
