In September 2019, IOM Finland assisted 29 persons to return voluntarily from Finland to their countries of origin. The numbers of voluntary returnees are approximately at the same level as in the previous year at this time. Similarly to the past months, most beneficiaries in September returned to Iraq.

IOM Finland's assistance to voluntary returnees from Finland is based on an agreement with the Finnish Immigration Service, Migri. Returnees can be granted either cash grants to help them reintegrate or in-kind-support such as assistance for starting a micro business. In 2019 from January to September, 54% of the returnees received in-kind support. This is a significant increase compared to last year's figures at the same time, when only 9 % of the returnees had benefited of the in-kind support.

According to IOM, voluntary return should always be the preferred mode of return, as it is the most sustainable alternative in view of the reintegration of migrants.
